Hanamaruki is one of Japan’s most respected miso manufacturers, with a proud heritage that dates back to November 1918, when founder Kaneharu Hanaoka began producing miso in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture (then known as Shinshu).

Originally trading under the “Maruki-jirushi” trademark, Hanamaruki quickly gained recognition for its authentic Shinshu miso. By 1919, sales had expanded to Tokyo, and in the decades that followed, the brand’s popularity spread nationwide.

In 1964, the company officially adopted the Hanamaruki trademark, marking a new era of growth as distribution expanded beyond Tokyo to Osaka, the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, and eventually throughout Japan. Hanamaruki soon became a household name, synonymous with quality and authenticity.

In 1983, the company rebranded as Hanamaruki Foods Inc., adopting a new corporate logo to reflect its modern, forward-looking identity. A landmark achievement followed in 1997, when Hanamaruki was selected as the official miso supplier to the Nagano Winter Olympics — a testament to the brand’s national prestige and product excellence.

Today, Hanamaruki stands as the second-largest miso manufacturer in the world, producing approximately 55,000 metric tonnes of miso annually. With over a century of craftsmanship, innovation, and dedication to flavour, the name Hanamaruki continues to be synonymous with true Japanese miso.
